Water Main Pipe Lining
Stop corrosion & leaks & restore flow in pressurized water mains.
Pipe corrosion occurs almost immediately as soon as water mains are put into service. Chlorine and oxygen corrode the pipes from within and the results are well known: discolored, bad tasting and foul smelling drinking water. This water also contains harmful heavy metals that have leached from the pipe into the water. Of course, as corrosion deposits build up, flow is reduced and heat transfer is impaired on heat exchange surfaces. Ultimately water mains may burst and smaller diameter pipes get pinhole leaks.
Pipe Surgeons offers three solutions to rehabilitate service mains and smaller diameter potable water systems:
Any of these three methods will restore and renew the piping system and quickly eliminate dangerous leaching of heavy metals into the water. The choice of water main pipe lining method depends on access, ground conditions, and which method is the most cost-effective and time-saving.
Water Main Pipe Bursting
The preferred method of water main pipe rehabilitation is pipe bursting. Both ends of the water main are opened up a cable is strung throughout the pipe. Next a conical “bursting head” is attached to one end of the cable, with the pointed end aimed at the pipe entrance.
The bursting head is attached to the new pipe that will be pulled into the old water main. If the bursting head is of a larger diameter that the old pipe, a new larger pipe with higher flow rates can be installed.
As the bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, the old pipe is broken apart, making way for the new pipe. Generally HDPE pipe is used, and Pipe Surgeons now offers pre-chlorinated HDPE pipe which reduces sanitation requirements after installation. Click to learn more about pipe bursting…
Water Main Epoxy Pipe Lining
If the water main has sufficient structural integrity, it may be cleaned, dried and then relined with a food grade NSF 61 approved epoxy coating. This method can be more expensive than pipe bursting because it requires thorough cleaning of the pipe prior to the water main epoxy pipe lining process.
